NCEAS is a diverse research community composed of scientists at many career stages filling many research roles including Center Associates, Early Career Researchers, Visiting Scientists, Postdocs, Analysts, Research Scientists, and Student Interns, all supported by administrative staff and project coordinators. Learn more about our People and Projects on our main NCEAS website.
Who are the Center Associates?
Center associates are senior research scientists who develop and support their own research projects and employ research staff. They work in and across disciplines such as social science, geography, ecology, fisheries, and genetics.
Who are the Early Career Researchers (ECRs)?
ECRs are research scientists with graduate degrees working at NCEAS in roles such as postdocs, analysts, or research associates. We are continuously building and maintaining a community that fosters collaboration, development, and growth as we navigate the early stages of our careers.
Who are the Visiting Scientists?
Visiting scientists are researchers who come to NCEAS for a short period of time. Some are summer-only visitors for whom NCEAS is a summer research "home". Some are on sabbatical for several months or a year.
What are Working Groups?
We believe in the value of collaboration. Our research happens in teams of researchers from around the world, called working groups. Working groups are typically composed of 12 to 18 experts from a range of disciplines, sectors, career stages, and institutions. They come together for short periods of time at NCEAS to tackle large-scale questions in basic and/or applied science, using the synthesis approach. Each participant brings their data, methods, experiences, and perspectives, while NCEAS offers logistical and technical support to facilitate their innovation. By integrating diverse perspectives and data sources, our working groups can connect dots, discover gaps in knowledge, and reveal untapped insights. In fact, research has shown the diversity of participants in our working groups is key to enabling greater productivity and problem-solving capacity (see Hampton and Parker, 2011 and Campbell et al., 2013).
NCEAS community events:
Roundtables
This is a lunch time forum every Wednesday (12:15pm - 1:00pm) in the NCEAS lounge. Talks or discussions are led by a member of the NCEAS community or a visiting scientist from a working group or other connection. Subjects can be a research topic, a technology or workflow question, a community issue, or a career development opportunity.
Current organizers: Marty Downs, Camila Poulsen Vargas
DEIJ Committee
The NCEAS DEIJ committee meets quarterly to advance the DEIJ Strategic Plan and discuss relevant topics as a community. They are in charge review and execution of the plan. Anyone is welcome to join - reach out to the cochairs to find out how to get involved.
We meet every Tuesday from 10:30 am - 11:00 am. This is an informal time where we share what's going on with the rest of the NCEAS community. And we drink coffee.
Staff organizer: Courtney Scarborough
Working Group Mixers
This is a chance for NCEAS residents and visiting working group members to meet, socialize, and network. Usually a mixer is organized during a working group's initial meeting, at the end of the work day (typically 5 - 6 pm). NCEAS provides the beer and pretzels!
Hacky Hours
Hacky Hours are times when our researchers get together to co-work in our classroom on different projects. This is a time to learn more about what other researchers are working on, collaborate, and group problem solve. Hacky Hours are held every other Wednesday in our first floor classroom.
